About Uruguay
Uruguay is the third smallest country in South America bordering Brazil in the North East and Argentina in the North West. The South of Uruguay features a 500 km coast line with beaches considered among the best in South America. The landscape is dominated by a network of rivers, plains and low hill ranges with a fertile coastal lowland. The climate in Uruguay is temperate with warm summers and cold winters. Montevideo is the youngest and southernmost capital city of South America. The Spanish founded it in the early 18th century as a military stronghold; its natural harbour soon developed into an active commercial centre. With a population of about 1.4 million distinguished by its high literacy rate, Montevideo is the economic, political and cultural centre of Uruguay.
