About Namibia

Namibia is a country which offers an exceptional range and abundance of wildlife and a striking landscape which provides the ideal backdrop. Namibia has four main geographic regions, all of which will be of great interest to the adventure traveller. In the north lies the Ethos Pan, a former lake, which is now an enormous alluvial basin and home to great herds of antelope species, zebra and most famously elephants. Along the Namibian cost in the west lies the famous Namib Desert – divided into the Skeleton Coast in the north and the Diamond Coast in the south. The northeast offers a slender corridor of spectacular scenery with fertile soil, wooded areas and great rivers. Namibia’s centre is occupied by a plateau in the middle of which, Windhoek the capital is located. Daytime heat, rather than rain, is the primary concern for most travellers to Namibia. While temperatures are generally comfortable year round, the warmest season is the period extending from November to March.

Volunteer – Save Our Wildlife (SOW) Project

Namibia is becoming more and more fragmented as new commercial farms are setting up. Most farmers do not tolerate predators as they pose a threat to their livestock. This includes: leopards, cheetahs, brown hyena, caracal, jackal etc. The project is conveniently located only 40+ km east of Windhoek near the Otjihase River, a non-perennial river that cuts through the farm. The area is a natural savannah paradise with riverine vegetation, lush grass plains and magnificent mountain views. Hartebeest, Oryx, and Kudu roam freely on the lush vegetation. The area is the means to preserving a nature-based lifestyle, away from the hustle and bustle of today's world. Every possible precaution has been taken to minimize environmental impact.

Volunteers will share in the vision of this project by playing a pro active role in reducing conflict between humans and predator. Methods used to achieve this objective are:

  • Capturing the problem animals using special box traps which will be set out in various locations where wild carnivores have been sighted on the surrounding farms

  • Fit radio collars to the animals and then release them away from human threat

  • The project will train a team of trackers that will also include volunteers to monitor the animal movements using GPS and handheld computers

  • The data will be logged and updated on a regular basis

  • The goal is to be able to inform farmers timorously when predators approach their land and specifically areas where livestock feed

  • The predator will be captured and safely released away from danger and continually monitored to ensure its safety and well being
